Mix all the oils together and then add the baking soda. Stir it well to cream it up.
I’ve always been fighting with unclear skin and my day job isn’t making it any better. Long term this has helped to keep my skin clear better than any store-bought stuff and works a treat on my husbands back as well. His acne is much worse than mine. We’ve been using this peeling for a month, 3 to 4 time a week since writing this post and we will keep using it.
Cayenne Pepper and Ginger Salve with added moisturisers is a great all-rounder. It’s mainly for Pain Relieve but also helps against wound infection, to heal cuts, bruises and burns and moisturizes.
The main ingredient is Cayenne Pepper, which when infused into oil releases its pain relieving properties.
The Ginger Root is used in treatments for Arthritis and improves blood circulation.
Cayenne pepper contains Capsaicin, which blocks pain when used topically. Unfortunately, its also an allergen and you should test it on your hand by making a paste of Cayenne powder and water. If after 24h no swelling or redness has appeared you can continue on to make Cayenne Pepper and Ginger Salve.
Slow Cooker (Regular pots won’t do. The oil is not meant to boil)
Nut Milk Bag, Cheesecloth or pipette to separate oil from the bits
Glass or plastic pots to store
Where to buy your supplies to make Cayenne and Ginger Salve
I prefer to buy my supplies in Bulk on Amazon. Many supplies can be used for other treatments or cooking and it works out well. You get a choice of regular or organic raw products, which you often don’t get in the shops.
I prefer to use this > Nut Milk Bag for straining because its quick and less messy. It’s strong design strains the very fine bits contained in this pain relieve salve. It has a well-worked seam and is washable.
How to make pain relieve salve
Infusing the Coconut or Olive Oil
First, you need to infuse your chosen Oil with the Cayenne Pepper, Ginger/ Ginger Root Powder and Turmeric. 5 tablespoons on 500g coconut or 500ml olive oil are on the stronger side for the amount of Capsaicin contained in the oils. You can use more or less Cayenne/Ginger/Turmeric to make it suit your pain relieve needs.
Olive Oil Infusion: This can be done by putting the olive oil into a glass jar, followed by the Cayenne, Ginger and Turmeric. Stir and leave in a warm place to infuse. It takes around 3 weeks to infuse. The fast way takes 3 to 4 hours in a slow cooker on the keep warm function.
Coconut Oil Infusion: This is best done in a slow cooker. Let the oil melt on medium or hot, depending on your functions, then turn down to keep warm. Add the Cayenne Pepper, Ginger and Turmeric and leave for up to 4 hours.
With both oils, the colour will change to orange. It will smell like a fresh ginger sponge. Yummy. 😛
Now you need to separate the oil from the bits. The oil will swim on top and can be separated with a turkey baster or pipette. But to get all of the oil its best to press it through a Nut Milk Bag or a cheesecloth.
I own a triple slow cooker with 3 pots. This makes the next step much easier. While I separate the cayenne and ginger infused oil, I melt the Bees Wax at the same time and put the oil straight into the pot with the wax. The oil is still warm and will help melt the wax from the top. Otherwise the beeswax can take a while to melt. Stir well until the bees wax has absorbed all the oil.
Let the Cayenne Pepper and Ginger salve cool a little until you see its starting to set. If it doesn’t set, its missing more wax. Put the pot back on the heat and add another 5g of wax and let it cool again. Repeat until it starts setting.
You can test the consistency of the Cayenne Pepper Salve with a metal teaspoon before it sets. This lets you see how the finished Cayenne Pepper and Ginger Salve is going to be like. Dip the spoon into the liquid and wait for a moment. The salve on the spoon should be soft and spreadable, not hard. If the salve turns out hard, add some more olive or coconut oil until you like the consistency.
Once the Cayenne Pepper Salve has started to change consistency in the pot, start adding the other oils and stir well.
Argan, Almond and Jojoba Oils are moisturizers
Calendula Oil helps to heal wounds and burns
Vegetable Glycerine is a natural preservative to keep your salve in date for longer.
Olive and Coconut oils usually have a shelve live of a year each, which makes them perfect for infusions. Check the jars when they arrive for expiration dates. If you paid over £4.00 for one jar but only a few months to go you were overcharged. Ask for a refund or send it back.
Cayenne and Ginger Massage Oil: In case you don’t have bees wax on hand, you can just use the mix of cayenne and ginger infused oils, plus moisturisers/ calendula oils and massage them onto your hands, knees and feet.
Personal Experience using Cayenne and Ginger Pain Relief Salve
At the time of writing this article, I had used this salve for one week and my usually cracked and callused hands and feet have stayed soft and springy. Wounds heal faster and the pain in my right thump has not returned. I use this salve on my hands, washed feet and legs at night.
I also had 2 burns on the same hand. One at the wrist and one on my pinky, which was really sore and blistered until I got home to put the salve on. In both cases, the inflammation, pain and swelling went down quickly and was gone the following morning.
A little goes a long way – so use sparingly. This goes for the pain reliefsalve and massage oil. Your skin won’t be able to absorb it all and it will feel sticky.
Please note that Cayenne Pepper and especially Turmeric are natural colourants and will stain light coloured clothes. Let the salve soak in first.
This salve is not suitable for pregnant women or when nursing. Do not use on the face (close to the eyes and mouth). It will burn.
Cayenne and Ginger salve is all natural and would not harm anyone in your household unless allergic. The salve could be eaten but would be very spicy. If it happens, especially with young children, give them plenty of water to drink. So keep out of reach.
